About Cryogenic Engineering Centre

Cryogenic Engineering Centre was established in 1976 on the recommendation of Nayudumma Committee for the advancement of cryogenics and cryogenic engineering. The objective of creating an advanced center like Cryogenic Engineering with inputs from three major disciplines, namely, Physics, Mechanical Engineering, and Chemical Engineering, was to generate expert manpower in this advanced field of science and technology through teaching and research. In teaching, the Centre offers a four-semester M.Tech. course in Cryogenic Engineering. Besides, it offers several electives related to cryogenics and cryogenic engineering at the B.Tech. level. Being a center of excellence, sponsored research and consultancy remain at the core of activities in the center. Major research areas pursued at the center include Superconductivity and superconducting devices, Vacuum Technology, Gas Separation and Purification, Refrigeration and Liquefaction of Gases, Cryogenic Food Processing, Natural Gas and Hydrogen Energy, Air Separation Technology, Cryogenic Process Engineering, Nitrogen Liquefiers, Cryogenic Instrumentation etc. A distinct indicator of the research activities at the Centre is the good number of publications The Centre draws a very good level of support from DST, BARC, ISRO, CHT, MHRD, CSIR and other government agencies. A very good funding has been received from DST under the FIST program to develop liquid-helium-free superconducting magnet-based research facility in the center. Besides these, research facilities and cryogen-production facilities have been substantially modernized through significant bi-nation collaboration under Indo-FRG Cooperation in Cryogenic Engineering. It is worthwhile to mention that the Centre maintains an uninterrupted production of liquid-nitrogen almost round the clock, and caters to the demand for liquid-nitrogen of not only the whole institute but also some government organizations in the Midnapore district. The Center has very good workshop facilities with competent and efficient supporting staff. Very good computational facility is provided to the students. Excellent computer facility is also provided to every faculty member. It also has a technical library with good number of selected technical books and journals which are procured regularly.
